Locks of Love for Tuesday

WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

  1. Been there, done that, and I got a terribly cute cut to boot! I love it! One of the best things I did in the last 12 months.

  2. I remember reading about your participation with them on your blog. It really is a great organization. It means so much to a child’s self esteem to get a wig if that is what the child wants.

There is one story I have from when I worked in the pediatric brain tumor world as an administrator, about a young girl who didn’t wat a wig. She was 16 and had lost all of her hair due to chemo. She was getting ready to return to school, and had told her best friend that she decided to not do a wig, but rather she would just wear a do-rag until her own hair grew back. Her best friend got on the bull horn and told most of the school what was going on, and do you know what? When that young lady got to school the following week EVERY single one of her friends had shaved their heads and had on do-rags so she wouldn’t feel out of the loop! Even girls who didn’t know her had joined in on the support. It’s one of my favorite stories and it illustrates the power of solidarity!
