Things to consider when he is coming home…

Here are a few things that have crossed my mind while preparing for Bryan to come through our front door. So many things have changed that used to be norms for our family before he left. Things like Supper. We used to have a sit down family supper every night, and it was the highlight of the day. Everyone participated and we talked, ate and just reconnected. My eating patterns have changed a lot, and I no longer eat a big meal at any point in the day. I am training myself to eat very small meals throughout the day. Also, the home we are in right now is one that he has never seen before. So many changes, and I am sure we are frozen in time in his mind.

So, here’s the list of my top concerns –

1. He may not appreciate eating Special K and bananas for supper.
2. Will he know how to sleep past 4:30 am?
3. Where are his clothes?? I must find them and unpack them from the last move!
4. Will he realize that I own the bathroom counter in the master bath? It’s mine!!
5. Should I let him pick which side of the bed he wants, or should I just assign it to him?
6. Will he like the way I have set the house up?
7. Is he going to walk down the hall yelling “lights out!” at 2200 every night?
8. Will he try and do pull ups on the kitchen door frame before entering to eat?
9. If he calls my kitchen the “mess hall” will it make me upset?
10. Will I become self conscious about the way I run when we are at the gym together? I don’t care what other people think about my form, but if he’s watching… gee … gosh. It makes me blush!
11. If, hypothetically speaking of course, his cordless drill was killed in action while drilling through something like, uhm… granite or something like that, and it was replaced with a pink one, hypothetically speaking of course, would he mind?

I am sure this list has many other items to be added as my excitement over his homecoming grows and grows. I am getting giddy about the idea of seeing him in our home.

  1. Okay, so Claire, I have a running list of these from years of deployments…but the drill one has me rolling…just a suggestion, when you destroy power tools, it’s always a grand idea to try to replace it with the identical one you destroyed. While I love pink, when I busted the DeWalt drill I bought another DeWalt.

Otherwise, he is just going to be happy to be home and things will fall into place….my husband is days out from R&R after completing the better part of this 15 mo deployment…and I too am nervous about him coming home, if only for 18 days….

I’m excited for you and all the changes you have in store!!!

  2. The drill part made me snort….hope yall have a great time enjoying each other!!!

  3. He will notice the pink drill for sure, but everything else will fall right into place. You will forget all these things once he walks through that door.

    Enjoy him while you can.

  4. I giggled out loud at the list - and I’m at work! I’m genuinely delighted for you, Claire - I hope you have a wonderful time together.

  5. I am sure your husband will proudly use the pink drill out where the whole neighborhood can see him. And do it while eating Special K for dinner.

And as for the side of the bed issue, in the first few years of marriage we switched a few times, then we just picked our sides and that is what we go with every where we go. I take the left, he takes the right, no matter the room.

  6. Claire that is PRICELESS! :)

My hubby would hold up the drill with the tips of his thumb and one finger (barely touching it) and exclaim, “What the he** am I supposed to do with this thing?”

As for the side of the bed issue, DH likes to be close to the door to protect me from intruders. So I always position the bed so that he is close to the intruders an I am close to the bathroom. win/win

I doubt your hubby will notice anything but YOU for quite some time.

(It will be a great opportunity to slip in some surprises such as the drill.)

I am very happy for you!

  7. Ok, so for future reference — if I want pink tools that is cool, but just replace the yellow ones with yellow. His and hers! I like it!

I am hoping that the fact that I have lost 40 pounds and 6 dress sizes since he left will be enough of a distraction that he won’t notice anything else! :)

  8. 40 lbs!!!! You are the WOMAN!

  9. Claire,

I lost a bunch of weight too…..and although he’s seen pictures and I’ve told him about it…I weigh less then he’s ever seen me, in a size I don’t think I ever wore in my life…so yeah, I gotta agree with you, anything he’s gonna see that makes a difference, the whole weight thing is gonna just wipe away…..

I know I’m a little worried that my husband may take a look at me at the airport and then go looking for “his wife”…..:D

  10. Thanks Cavmom — I am less of a woman now, but in a good way! ;)

ASW: I am in size that I used to be in regularly, but Bryan has never seen me this small either. It feels good, and now I can show off my curves to him a little since they are all back in the right place! :) Congrats to you for your weight loss too! I am sure dh will be very pleasantly surprised! Bryan said that with the letters and pictures telling him about the weight loss it was still very drastic to him the first time he saw me. I even have a picture of him standing next to me when we were first reunited… and uh, well he’s copping a look! ;)
