He’s got the whole world in his hands…
One day when Mike was on a mission with his unit outside the FOB they were approached by some kids. Mike told me that the kids don’t ask for candy any more in this area, but rather they ask for school supplies. When Mike told me about the need there I really wanted to help. I was told by a friend who works at Mead to write up a note, and these things combined are what prompted me to ask for the donation — 600 pounds of supplies and well over 70 boxes shipped later, I hope we have been able to help the children in the Diyala Province in this small way.
One little boy came up to Mike that day and said “Hey, American soldier, do you have a globe?” Most kids ask for pens, pencils, crayons or paper. This little boy had a very big request. The request kind of tickled Mike. He said it was funny to him that these kids would think that he would have a globe in his pocket or something. I found the request very sweet and it really touched me. So, I finally found some globes and 30 of them are now on their way to Mike to give to the school there. I hope the little boy, whose original request sparked this search and delivery, will get one of his very own.
The most awesome thing about these globes is that they are inflatable. Maybe the next time someone asks an American soldier if he has a globe to give away, he can surprise them by saying “Why, yes! As a matter of fact I do!” I told Mike that it shows what these kids think about the Americans they see. I think that they believe that our Troops can probably give them just about anything they really need… including the whole world.
