What does your daddy do for a living?

When Mr. Hooah! was at Ft. Benning the only explanation I had to offer a very inquisitive and hard to fool 3-year old girl was “papa is away at work.” It was the truth. Of course I explained to her that it was his “far, far, away” work and that one day we would all be together again. She began to understand this whole Army life to a degree, and when people asked her about papa she would say “My papa is shouldier.” That’s not a typo. She pronounced it like “shoulder” with the special suffix. That was a new understanding since earlier in the year every soldier was called a “Michael” because as far as she was concerned our Michael had invented the whole soldier-Army get-up.

Well her papa has a new job now, and you won’t believe what her little mind has concocted this time.

When Mr. Hooah! came home he started back at the Chemical Company he had left early to join the military. We needed income and needed it fast, and they had a spot for him and we took it. Emma could not accept either of us telling her that papa was going to work again. So, we consoled her by telling her everyday that papa was going to the “close by” work and not the “far away” work. For a child with an imagination like hers, that explanation was just way too boring.

One day when I was going to the Company to pick Mr. H! up, Emma said “Look! It’s the Chocolate Factory! Papa works at the Chocolate Factory!” Uhm, yeah. Ok. Actually, papa works in a laboratory with reactors and chemicals and all of that good stuff, but hey, if she thinks he is knee deep in chocolate each day that’s fine with me. Well, Emma took it a step further and she now proclaims that her father is an “Oompa-Loompa.” He is a very tall one, at that.

Everyday when we leave the YMCA the ladies up front can’t wait to say “Hey, Emma, where’s your papa?” Emma, of course, loudly and proudly proclaims “My papa is an Oomp-Loompa at the Chocolate Factory!”

From brave, fierce “shouldier” to “Oompa-Loompa” in such a short time. My man is a man of a 1000 titles, and an International Man of Mystery. I’ll blog about that one another time though.
