A new project in our future?
My friend Piper is very interested in doing another project like our Operation School Supply project, and I think I have an idea. She has asked a few times, but I wasn’t sure what our next project would be. It all depends on contacts and stated needs.
A couple of weeks ago I posted in one of my good news threads about an orphanage in Iraq that a group of soldiers have adopted as a special mission (I will link to it as soon as I locate it again). I am going to try and establish contact with the unit that is collecting items for the kids (and maybe the staff too) and see what they are willing to let us get for them. There is always a balance in these projects because you want to be supportive, but you don’t want to send more things than is feasibly deliverable for the soldiers.
One aspect of the project I would like to explore is to ask you (and I will be doing this myself) to make a homemade blanket or two. I will post several patterns for very easy to make blankets. I even have a pattern for a NO SEW fleece blanket that is knotted. It is very easy to make. I know this project may take some time to pull together, so if we start now we can ship the blankets over around the time when things start to cool down over there. A lot of folks don’t realize how cold it gets.
I really want to do the blankets because I thought it would be a wonderful personal gift that a child can keep for him/herself. It’s portable, it’s personal, and it can fill a basic need for warmth and security.
If you are interested in participating in this project, please either post here or send me an email. Make sure that I have an email address to correspond with you on the details and deadlines. I will probably have participants send in pictures of their blankets and items and then ask each of you to send a couple of large flat rate boxes directly to the troops who will be receiving them.
Now, let’s get busy. There are some precious kiddos who have some practical needs.

Miz Claire,
Count me in….

For the ones that might be ‘more adventurous’. I can probably get my hands on a quilt pattern that is called a quillow — quilt folds up into a pillow. My mom made them for 3 of my kids and my sons still have theirs around…actually I think I finally tossed my oldest son’s, but middle son still has his.
