I knew he was doing some of this way back when during the '04 campaign he spent time with a family who had just lost there son when he was here in Iowa. I had also heard of other times so it came as no surprise to me that this was something that he did many times over. I have a feeling he may continue to write or call those after he leaves office. That being said, he has done some things as far as economics that leave me wondering.
