It’s not the economy, it’s your morals
I am so tired of seeing headlines proclaiming “Theft is on the rise due to the bad economy!” The first headline I came across proclaiming such rubbish was out a few months ago. The woman was stealing purses. Yes. When the economy goes bad we are all reduced to stealing our designer handbags instead of paying for them like decent hardworking citizens.
Rubbish.
I will say it again, it’s not the economy, it’s your morals – your values. We are not talking about an economy that is so tanked people have no food to feed their children. God forgive me if I ever point my finger at someone who is truly hungry and desperate… the only thing my hands should be doing at that time is serving them food and sharing what I have. I am not talking about those very rare cases in this Country of plenty.
As an experienced social worker I will tell you that the only people in this Country who are at the most risk of literally starving to death are the poorest Americans who live very far from cities and have no transportation. Some of them do depend on their own soil and missionaries in this Country to ensure they survive. For the rest of us though, there are soup kitchens in nearly every city and town in the USA. There is a food stamp program, there are food banks, food closets and food buses that go around to even feed the homeless. So, with all of these resources at hand why do we keep seeing these headlines?
A new one from the AP (link only since I am too poor to quote their oh so golden words — roll my eyes):
Economy Has More Women Becoming Strippers
Many Turning To Adult Entertainment Industry For Work

Mkay. So, times are tight so I might as well become a stripper or a porn star. Yeah. I’m buying that one. First of all if our economy is in such dire straights how in the living beans can any one afford to waste their money on adult entertainment? Secondly, I am sure there are other jobs available. It may not pay as much, but you get to keep your dignity and leave your morals in tact.
Stealing, stripping, and other acts of immorality are a choice. Stop blaming the economy.

Stripping…do they pay you to put your clothes BACK on?

Probably not… I would imagine the economy would have to be really bad for anyone to offer to pay someone to do something moral! haha!

You made a couple of interesting points here. I mean, it’s true… No one wanted this recession to happen, but the majority of people kinda asked for it. I still think programs like food stamps, unemployment insurance, etc are useful but totally depending on it just shows laziness. People can depend on stuff like that WHILE looking for ways to get back up, but not relying on it solely.

I am fast coming to the conclusion that we love comfort more than freedom. We want a nanny to care for us so we can feel safe and secure, and in wanting that we hand them all of our freedom and liberty. Welfare is a blanket of complacency. It’s abused beyond belief and the government does nothing to reform.

Why should the government reform? The main goal of the government these days seems to be money and power. This is a means to that end.

Well they think that will be the result, but in reality they will end up as slaves. They can’t sell the American people into slavery and not wear some shackles themselves. Proof positive by all the butt kissing we see going on at the G20 summit.
