I’m not buying it… are you?
A few days ago news broke about a DHS document, signed off by Napolitano, alerting law enforcement to the threat of the rise of “right wing extremists.” The document is really bizarre and does not offer very good definitions, but what really got a rise out of me was the naming of our honorable Veterans. Now, Napolitano is trying to explain exactly why Veterans were mentioned in the document. It’s an argument so full of holes it’s not even funny.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78wulwAB5b0
Napolitano claims that the only reason she agreed to sign off on the document that mentions Veterans is because the argument that Timothy McVeigh was former Army and that is where he got his training to carry out the Oklahoma City bombing. She said that made sense to her.
According to her reasoning Veterans were named in the report because of McVeigh alone. This means that they are basing McVeigh’s sociopathy on his military training. The military did not train McVeigh on how to blow up the Federal building. I can say with confidence they were not teaching soldiers how to make illegal and makeshift bombs, nor do they teach them how to target innocent people — regardless of what the anti-military crowd may say. McVeigh most certainly did NOT use his military training to blow up the building. Terry Nichols taught McVeigh how to make that bomb.
Actually McVeigh was only in the military for 4-years. He did see combat, but so have MILLIONS and MILLIONS of Veterans over generations and they do not come back and blow up buildings. So, why is his brief military service being singled out as a characteristic that may mean other Veterans are a potential threat for doing the same?
Let’s talk about other characteristics of this deranged lunatic.
- He comes from a divorced family with two sisters… so maybe we should put all white men from divorced families with two sisters on that list …
- He was picked on a lot in school and he resorted to playing video games, maybe we should put those characteristics on the list…
- He was a security guard after leaving the Army, so maybe we should list all security guards as being a potential threat to National Security..
- He was raised Catholic, but left his roots behind in adulthood. He later claimed to be an agnostic. So, should we put those claiming agnosticism on the list..
Isn’t it absurd to draw a correlation between these other characteristics and someone who poses a threat to our safety? McVeigh was a sociopath — plain and simple. He was able to function in the military for a brief period of time, but he could not withstand the structure.
This is a personality issue, and a severe disorder of a value system. Personality disorders are very complex and are very hard to trace to their origins because there are so many factors involved. Ted Bundy was a well dressed and well spoken man — should we assume then that well dressed and well spoken men are sociopaths? That’s absurd!
It is absolutely, positively absurd to draw a correlation between our Veterans and any threat of extremist behavior based on the behavior of ONE UNHINGED lunatic who left the military because he simply could not take the structure and the uncompromising demand for the respect of authority.
It was a cheap shot taken at the expense of those who have sacrificed more than any for this Country. It’s disgusting and it’s outright bigotry. She would do better to just say she’s sorry and she will be sure to never allow disrespect to be shown to our bravest and finest again. Don’t hold your breath…

Claire,
Whenever I’m at a bit for a loss of words you’re able to articulate my frustrations with laser like precision. It’s one of the reasons that this retired jarhead loves DBS, the depth and breadth of Damon’s work subtly immortalized some of life’s absurdities of military service, and he gives us gentle hilarity when we need it. I also appreciate the fact that he doesn’t shy away from some of the harsher realities.
If it was possible I have less respect for Janet Napolitano, she is no friend of the military. She and her ilk should be tarred and feathered. What a disgraceful and unpatriotic American.

Hank, you know what they say about great minds!
I think that the hateful left is showing their true colors now. They know they technically in power, but we don’t need to fear them in the long run. Power comes in many shapes and forms, and the power of principle and conviction is pretty mighty. I am sure we will see some things that disgust us in the next few years, but we need to pray diligently that honorable principles are restored. This is just a season we have to ride out — like the hurricane season with lots and lots of hot air and turbulence.

Claire, I agree with you 100%. I live in Okalhoma City and McVeigh is not one of our favorite topics, but to compare our returning veterans with him is idiotic! I am a veteran of KheSahn, having spent 10 1/2 years active in the Marines. I vividly remember our homecoming in 1968 in California, we were cursed and spit at. This bashing is reminiseint of that. The left is really reaching for straws, I’m hoping this will convince some of the “fence-riders” to get off on the right side. By the same token, N. Pelosi hasn’t a clue. She is calling the “tea parties” an “astro turf, movement”. She had better watch it, she may get burns from this “astro turf”! Keep up the good work Hank.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised at all of this. Anyone who didn’t know it was the reality of the left mindset probably shouldn’t have the right to vote based on mental defect. All of those who put the President and Democratic Congress into office must support Ms Napolitano and her views. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be in office. These types of things will continue to surface again and again over the next 4 years. That means that approximately 52% of the population believes just as she does…..especially the President and his administration. After all, they vetter her and the other appointees in minute detail.
Yep. It’s a cheap shot. And, yes, it is disgusting. Yes, it’s the left wing core belief system.

Love how she recommends that they actually read the report she admitted that she was only briefed on.
I can understand what they were trying to get at with this report, but could they have possibly phrased it any worse? Hell, common sense would tell you that lumping vets as possibles for extremists would not go over very well with much of the law enforcement community that the report was intended for, being as a good number of them are vets, themselves…

I can only agree that this document tends to slap veterans in the face, with unveiled efforts to paint them as “possibly” the same ilk as McVeigh. In each paragraph which referred to returning veterans, it was to directly correlate their attitudes and leanings with that of people like McVeigh. Guess you could say I am more than a little “miffed” that I saw no real mention of all the 35 – 37 Muslim training camps which are currently flourishing within our own country. I guess Homeland Security really doesn’t consider them a threat because one cannot mention them in a politically correct way. Currently, I am just glad that there are many more of us than there are of them here who can and will use our firearms and personal skills, if necessary, to curtail any overt danger they present to our country. The military oath that I took was to defend this country against all enemies, foreign and domestic! I don’t remember anyone ever saying that it was not binding for life, which I consider it to be.

These escalating attacks on our military personnel and veterans are a complete and utter disgrace. SInce they are coming from inside the government–they are more than a disgrace…they are a dangerous tide rising against free men and women everywhere.
Live free or die.

If we are looking for the seeds of racism, look within appointee’s such as Napolitano. The story inside the story would be of more interest than just the product, this hatred document against our soldiers. I wonder how long it took the “think tank” to work up the “McVeigh angle” after the release of the document and why the president himself (Commander and Thief) did not apoligize. No apology, No Responsibility, No Accountablity, then it did not happen! That is how dangerous policy and profiling begin. Wise advise would be look for the other policy doctrines that are written, but not publicized. That should open the eyes of the sleeping public. Get on board with the teaparty movement! At least you could express your disgust publically. If not now, WHEN!

Military and Law Enforcement Officers share much of the same training and some of the same stressors associated with use of lethal force. This FLAWED RATIONALIZATION flies in the face of MANY states who are attempting to allow retired Law Enforcement and Military to have concealed carry permits to make our cities and streets safer with personnel who are trained in weapons and trained to protect those in need.
Another flaw is that there is no other subsection of the population that has such a high level of patriotism (love of country) than those of us who have served in our military and been willing to die for our country and what it represents.
God bless!

Excellent points through out the comments.
Did you all hear on the news today that the new #1 on the FBI’s most wanted list is a left-wing radical from Berkeley who is (of course!) not a Veteran!?
Wow. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-04-21-most-wanted-american_N.htm?csp=34
