In November of 2007 we lost Paul Tibbets, the pilot who dropped the first atomic bomb to put an end to WWII and save millions of lives in the long run. Today we lost the co-pilot who participated in the Nagasaki mission.

We need to remember these brave men and how their acts ended a war that would have raged on the ground, and would have cost more American lives than we can begin to fathom. Thank God for the technology and bravery displayed that put an end to a war.

Thanks for posting this story.
The stories of the bombings were rarely discussed in our family. My great-uncle, Ray Gallagher, was the assistant flight navigator on the Boxcar which bombed Nagasaki. If memory serves, either Ray’s daughter’s name or the name of her doll was painted on that plane. After military life, he returned to Chicago and quietly raised his family. “War is ugly” my grandmother quoted him as saying, and the loss of the Japanese children deeply saddened him. But he strongly believed in the mission and in his country.

Cathy, that is the truth for that generation. So many men who did so many courageous acts, and then never talk about it. I think for them it was the only way to come home and put it behind them. That war was horrendous, but it had a definite end. I pray that one day our Veterans get an end to the war they fought in — not just an end, but a victorious end where the entire Country stands and applauds the incredible job they have done.
