NEWSFLASH Marines Banned from Social Networking Sites
Before this may have been posted as bragging rights but as the years pass I think it probably just dates me as one of the old guys, that is my little claim to fame as having been the author of the first Internet Policy of the Marine Corps which was released as an ALMAR (All Marine Message) entitled as I recall “Prohibited and Permissive Use Of The Internet”. I’ll pull the resource tonight as I know exactly where I kept a hard copy of this little document. Anyway, the following caught me by complete surprise – thanks to a twitter from my social networking consultants LanfordSevier in reference to an post penned by Frank Reed
Date Signed: 8/3/2009
MARADMIN Active Number: 0458/09
R 032022Z AUG 09
UNCLASSIFIED//
MARADMIN 0458/09
MSGID/GENADMIN/CMC WASHINGTON DC C4//
SUBJ/IMMEDIATE BAN OF INTERNET SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES (SNS) ON MARINE CORPS ENTERPRISE NETWORK (MCEN) NIPRNET//
I know this is going to impact many active duty and retired Marines and will spill over to the other services if put fully into effect, curious to see if this extends into my coffee business enterprise as well which depends on social networking to get the word out about the best damn coffee in the world, only to be enjoyed while reading KDH and DBS of course!
Shameless plugging aside, this is only the first round of reporting so I suspect this may mature a bit more. I’ll check into what Wes of TogetherWeServed fame is running into as well as some other Veteran entrepreneurs that I know will be disappointed. OPSEC has always been a priority with all of us – so there will be no grumblings in regard to protecting our men and women in harm’s way – that’s not to say we won’t be working on a better solution.
I’m glad I’ll be able to explore into this a little further in person as I’m visiting the Pentagon and Headquarters Marine Corps next week in our annual TWS reunion.

Hank, thanks for your insights on this. I look forward to more from you on this specific topic.
I have been following the discussion on this one for most of the day. One of the points made is that this applies ONLY to government/military ISP’s. It was suggested that deployed troops have access to other ways of communication, and often even their own servers on their own personal computers….
Claire can tell you I’m a tech idiot, so I may not have the right terminology here..lol Forgive me, please, if I am not too clear here.
However, I remember back when I was on Tanker Bros and the rules changed for deployed soldiers in regards to owning/writing and accessing blogs from the sandbox. I remember the ripples, as at that time more than a few were maintaining milblogs whilst deployed. The new rules meant that Master Gunner, owner and creator of TB, had to make choices regarding TB. In order to follow the new rules, he basically handed it over to us caretakers, because he couldnt even access his own site.
On the surface reading (from my non military mindset) I have to say I agree with the spirit of these new rules. It has always bothered me that so much seemingly innocuous info is out there on the internet, and yet, when put together, can create a bigger picture for those who wish us and our troops great harm. Loose lips sink ships and all..
This IS a topic near and dear to my heart (especially considering my ties with Soldiers’ Angels) and I could write a loooooooong piece on my thoughts on this.
Instead, I shall wait with interest your further insights.
Thank YOU!
